For Norelem’s trade show appearance, Nico Kleiner developed a compact engraving machine that customizes promotional materials and signs right on the spot. The project demonstrates how a practical system can be quickly designed using CAD data and a high proportion of standard parts.

Ballpoint pens and flyers are ubiquitous at trade shows. Instead, the mechanical engineering company Norelem wanted to offer visitors an experience that would also showcase the capabilities of its own product line: Visitors should be able to have promotional materials and signs custom-engraved. The technical solution was developed as part of a technical project. To achieve this, Nico Kleiner designed a portable laser engraving machine capable of processing various materials and easily deployed at a trade show booth. The project involved several requirements: With external dimensions of approximately 400 mm x 400 mm (15.7 × 15.7 inches), the machine had to be compact and portable. The working area was to measure approximately 200 × 200 millimeters (7.9 × 7.9 inches) and be capable of accommodating workpieces up to 100 millimeters (3.9 inches)  in height. At the same time, it had to be able to engrave various materials, be easy to operate, and fit within a budget of 4,000 euros (US$4,520). The design itself was also part of the challenge: At least 70 percent was to consist of Norelem products. In the end, approximately 90 percent of the design was implemented using the company’s components and standard parts.
