Mercedes-Benz is working on the product architecture for its next-generation models, which are set to hit the market in the 2030s. At least, that’s what the Handelsblatt reported. However, instead of building the vehicles on different production platforms as usual, Mercedes now plans to manufacture the cars using a more modular approach. The company apparently intends to adopt a modular design principle in which front, rear, side, and underbody components are broken down into separate modules and manufactured accordingly based on the vehicle’s size. Mercedes itself refers to this strategy as an ambitious plan for the future.

Mercedes Has Been Keeping an Eye on the Competition

Thanks to this modular and scalable approach, there will no longer be a need for different platforms for different vehicle sizes in the future. That is why management is referring to “tech stacks” when discussing the next generation of cars. The Mercedes-Benz Group aims to reduce costs, increase efficiency, and speed up production, according to reports. The company is modeling its approach after the U.S. manufacturer Tesla and Chinese automakers, which are pursuing similar concepts. Opel’s parent company, Stellantis, is also relying on a unified platform on which vehicles of various sizes and with different powertrains can be built.
