Whether it’s measurement systems, machine modules, or the fingers of a humanoid robot hand: In many applications, there is a growing need for greater performance, precision, and reliability within an ever-smaller installation space. Miniature gearboxes and microdrives are emerging as key technologies in this context.
Since mid-2026, Harmonic Drive has been offering its CSF Mini gearheads in size 7 as well, in six variants designed for different installation scenarios.

Miniature gearheads and micro-drive solutions make it possible to achieve precision, zero backlash, and high power density in confined spaces. Applications range from general mechanical engineering, dental milling machines, surgical robots, and metrology to humanoid robot systems. Among the latest miniature gearheads on the market are the four new CSF-Mini gearhead variants in size 7 from Harmonic Drive.
When Every Millimeter Counts
Harmonic Drive's PMG gearheads can be customized for specific applications, for example, in terms of material selection or the mechanical interface.

The trend toward miniaturization is no longer a niche topic: Modern production facilities, optical measurement systems, and many medical devices require increasingly compact assemblies. At the same time, neither dynamic performance nor accuracy can be compromised. In metrology in particular, motion errors are immediately noticeable, as even minimal deviations can affect the quality of a measurement. For this reason, backlash-free precision gearheads—including the PMG series from Harmonic Drive—are frequently used in coordinate measuring machines, optical measurement systems, and wafer inspection systems.
Tip
Harmonic Drive will be exhibiting at SPS in Nuremberg (November 24–26, 2026): Hall 4, Booth 236.
The gearheads combine a gearhead assembly with an integrated output bearing, offering compact dimensions and low weight. Depending on the size, they provide maximum torques ranging from 0.3 to 14.7 Nm. The product family includes sizes 5 through 14 with reduction ratios ranging from 50:1 to 110:1. They are particularly well-suited for applications with high demands on positioning accuracy and long-term stability.
Backlash-Free Miniature Gearboxes in New Variants
The CSF-Mini worm gear units are very compact. In size 3, for example, they have dimensions of 13 by 13 millimeters.

The CSF-Mini miniature harmonic drives are ideal when axial compactness is required. Harmonic Drive achieves this through the short-profile HFUC mounting kit in combination with a compact four-point bearing, which is characterized by high concentricity and radial runout accuracy. The series delivers the precision of a backlash-free shaft gearbox in a size comparable to a large shirt button (13 x 13 millimeters / (0.51 × 0.51 inches in size 3). Thanks to their lightweight aluminum housings, they are also suitable for lightweight construction applications and dynamically moving axes. As shaft-type gearheads, these miniature gearheads transmit comparatively high torques while maintaining a compact design.
In mid-2026, Harmonic Drive completed the CSF Mini gearhead series with four additional models in size 7. The gearheads are now also available in size 7 in six different variants: with an output flange or output shaft, with an input shaft, or for direct motor mounting. This opens up new design possibilities, particularly for applications with limited installation space.
Miniature Gears in Robotics, Micro-Machining, and Medical Technology
Miniature gearboxes are particularly well-suited for compact robotic systems, where backlash-free shaft-type gearboxes enable precise positioning along multiple axes, since target positions can be approached from both sides without reverse backlash. In measuring machines, miniature gearheads help ensure that probe heads trace component contours with high accuracy and that precise measurement results are achieved. Other applications include micro-machining—such as the manufacture of watch components—and surgical robots, where they enable precise movement of instruments and thus minimally invasive procedures.
Miniature Gears as a Key Technology for Humanoid Robotics
One of the most exciting future applications for miniature gearboxes is humanoid robotics: For humanoid robot hands, the practical size range for integrated finger actuators is typically between about 10 and 16 millimeters in diameter. Actuators in this size range offer a good balance between installation space, torque, and integrability. They can be housed within finger-like structures while simultaneously providing the necessary gripping forces for delicate manipulation tasks.
The worm gear principle is particularly well-suited for this application, as it enables high gear reduction ratios, high torque density, and backlash-free motion transmission. With a high gear ratio, such as 100:1 (as in the CSF-3), a particularly small motor can be selected, resulting in a highly compact drive system. The integrated output bearing directly supports the bearing forces acting on the finger joint.

For micro-drive technology with even stricter requirements regarding installation space and weight, there are specialized companies, such as Micromotion GmbH (part of the Harmonic Drive Group). These often custom-designed drive solutions are required for optical systems, semiconductor manufacturing, medical technology, vacuum applications, and projects in the aerospace industry.
Low-backlash planetary gearheads and backlash-free harmonic drive gearheads are combined with various motor types, such as stepper motors, DC motors, or brushless motors. When used in conjunction with lead screws or eccentrics, these components create high-precision yet extremely compact linear systems. Custom drive solutions with integrated additional functions make it possible to reduce the installation space even further.
The miniaturization of drive systems is much more than just a technological trend. It delivers tangible benefits for machine design and development: lighter systems, more compact machines, higher integration densities, and new degrees of freedom in product development.
