Increasing charging capacities, stricter safety requirements and regional differences in charging standards are increasing the complexity of developing new energy vehicles (NEVs). To make it easier for car manufacturers and suppliers to obtain global approval for their systems, Keysight Technologies and the China Automotive Technology and Research Center (CATARC) Test Center for Alternative Drive Vehicles have set up a joint innovation laboratory for charging technology.

The aim of the cooperation is to drive forward the development of test facilities and to put the validation of EV charging systems on a reliable, standardized basis. Seamless interoperability between the regional markets is currently considered one of the biggest challenges for hardware developers in order to minimize development risks and achieve time-to-market targets.

Focus on Charging Communication And Interoperability

As part of the new laboratory, the partners are combining Keysight's testing and validation solutions with CATARC's regulatory expertise in national testing and certification. In terms of technology, the laboratory is primarily dedicated to charging compatibility and the underlying communication interface between the vehicle and the charging station.

Both established and future standards are supported. The focus is on the requirements of the international Combined Charging System (CCS) and the upcoming Chinese national charging standard 2024, among others. To cover these next-generation standards for the European, North American and Chinese markets, the CATARC NEV Inspection Center has implemented Keysight's conformance test solutions for vehicle-to-charger communication (EVCC/SECC) in its portfolio.

Harmonizing Global Standards

By pooling their expertise in measurement technology and certification, both sides hope to accelerate global electromobility. "Keysight is committed to driving electrification through innovation and global collaboration," explains Thomas Götzl, Vice President and General Manager of Automotive & Energy Solutions at Keysight Technologies. "In close cooperation with CATARC, we want to help shape the future of charging technologies and the associated industry standards worldwide."

CATARC also sees technical validation as a critical success factor: "The charging test solutions are the crucial link in this partnership. Through the laboratory, we are pooling our expertise to make the development of new drives safer and more efficient," adds Fan Bin, Deputy Chief Engineer of the CATARC NEV Inspection Center. (heh)
