In Germany, the three recalls in total involve approximately 10,000 vehicles, according to data from the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). The recall primarily affects the VW models ID.3, ID.4, ID.7, and ID. Buzz, as well as the Cupra Born. It had already been known since last week that Volkswagen was preparing a recall due to defective batteries, but the exact number of affected models was not yet known. In rare cases, the problem can lead to increased thermal stress on these batteries, which could, in extreme cases, cause a fire.

Anyone Who Receives a Letter Now Is Included

According to the guidelines, the batteries must be inspected at service centers. Until then, vehicle owners should charge their vehicles to no more than 80 percent and affix warning stickers. Where technically possible, the system will automatically limit the available charging capacity. However, the limit can only be lifted once a battery has been deemed to be in good working order. Those affected will be notified by mail. The letter will contain all important information—including details on the exact procedure and the relevant contacts. Further corrective measures will also be communicated in writing. According to earlier statements by a VW spokesperson, battery modules affected by the defect do not necessarily need to be replaced—a software update may suffice.
