At Audi Logistics, approximately one million picks are made every day to ensure that the right parts are available in the right order at the right workstation for assembly—this precise sequencing is crucial for a demand-driven supply of materials in the automaker’s series production.

Audi and Agile Robots aim to take this process to the next level in collaboration with NVIDIA and Dassault Systèmes: In the Production Lab, where Audi tests future technologies for production and logistics, mobile humanoid robots from Agile Robots retrieve parts from material bins and place them in sequence carts in the correct order for the final assembly of Audi premium vehicles. Audi’s supply chain experts contribute their expertise in sequencing and define the operational requirements to test the use case under real-world conditions.

Testing of the use case has already begun: Before the robots are deployed in Audi’s smart intralogistics environment, a virtual twin of the logistics environment is created using Dassault Systèmes’ DELMIA application. In the future, LEO, the AI-based virtual companion from Dassault Systèmes, will support engineers and accelerate planning processes from months to days. The virtual twin on Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform is used to test the feasibility, cycle times, ergonomics, and safety of robot deployment. The company’s Industry World Models and NVIDIA Omniverse Libraries are utilized for this purpose.

Taking Advantage of the Benefits of Mobile Humanoid Robots

Agile Robots, based in Munich, already has over 20,000 robotic solutions in use by customers worldwide. The company’s newly developed mobile humanoid robots combine the reach and dexterity of a humanoid with the robustness of a mobile base. They operate at human height and can be integrated into Audi’s existing production and logistics environment.

The proof-of-concept supports Audi’s vision of highly automated in-house logistics within the “thinking factory,” where AI and robots work hand in hand with employees. Automating complex, repetitive sequencing tasks can relieve employees of manual work, increase efficiency, and free them up for other value-adding tasks.

The future of manufacturing depends on how successfully we combine industrial expertise with artificial intelligence.

Two of the most persistent challenges in automation are handling parts that come in a wide variety of shapes and forms—or so-called "flexible" parts—and reliably picking unsorted components from containers.

Agile Robots’ mobile humanoids were developed to overcome these challenges. Thanks to their two-handed manipulation capabilities, they can safely handle even large and flexible parts. At the same time, their AI-powered perception enables them to precisely recognize, grasp, and handle a wide variety of components—even when these are stored in different containers or presented in different positions and packaging.

Paving the Way for Mass Production

Together, the partners aim to push the boundaries of automated order picking. With their concept, they demonstrate how Physical AI-powered humanoid robots can become a game-changer for the logistics of the future. In doing so, they enable the automation of tasks that have long been out of reach for conventional robotics and pave the way for mass production.
