Audi's Appearance with Trump Sparks Outrage in Some Circles

The joint appearance with Trump had caused great surprise but also sharp criticism—even calls for his resignation! One factor here is that Audi’s internal rules prohibit high-profile public appearances with political parties or politicians running for office during the three months leading up to an election. However, midterm elections are scheduled for November 3 in the U.S. The question is whether Audi was even aware of this, or whether Trump simply seized the opportunity to bolster his position—after all, thousands of jobs are at stake in Georgia, which he can then claim as a victory for himself. VW Works Council Chair Daniela Cavallo put it this way: “Several minutes filled with racism, sexism, xenophobia, transphobia, and contempt for democracy! And then one of our top corporate representatives takes the stage and actively campaigns on his behalf!” The Left Party faction in the state legislature is now even calling for Döllner’s resignation. Audi, however, explains that this decision focused on the opportunity to advance the conditions for a long-term investment by Audi in the U.S. After all, such an investment is designed to last for decades—and thus extends far beyond individual election cycles. In this particular situation, the aim was to appropriately balance the company’s interests with a specific timeframe for the project. Nothing about this appearance was intended to express a partisan political stance!
