Moia is now offering rides in Hamburg with the self-driving, all-electric ID Buzz. Residents who have registered in advance can book the vehicles via an app. Booking options in Hamburg’s mobility app “hvv switch” are expected to follow.

As with the existing service, passengers traveling along similar routes share a ride. They get on and off at virtual stops. Initially, the service will cover parts of Winterhude, Barmbek, and Wandsbek. During the test phase, rides are free. A safety driver will accompany the vehicle. Up to ten vehicles are expected to be in service as part of the project.

Further Tests in Other Cities

In addition to Hamburg, the ride-hailing service operates in other locations in Germany, Norway, and the United States. According to Moia, it is preparing additional pilot programs with passengers in those locations. In Hamburg, the vans are operating as part of the “ALIKE” project—funded by the Federal Ministry of Transport.

The goal: to find ways in which autonomous mobility can complement buses and trains in the future. Under Hochbahn’s overall project management, Moia, Holon, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, and the Hamburg Authority for Transportation and Mobility Transition are collaborating on the project. During the project, two integrated autonomous on-demand services will be developed: one by Moia and, next, one by Hochbahn using vehicles from Holon.
