The Papenburg-based (Germany) Meyer Werft and MSC Cruises are confident that negotiations on a contract worth billions can be successfully concluded in the coming weeks, as both companies jointly stated. As recently as February, MSC had indicated that a deal would be finalized by the end of June. MSC Cruises and the state-bailed-out Meyer Werft signed a letter of intent late last year for the major contract worth up to $12 billion. The contract calls for the construction of four to six cruise ships at the Meyer Werft. The contract is expected to keep the shipyard fully occupied through 2035.

The Ship's Design Has Already Been Discussed

This involves a comprehensive and complex set of contracts, the drafting of which typically takes at least half a year. In the meantime, however, concrete planning for the ships’ design and negotiations for the conclusion of the relevant contracts have already reached an advanced stage, the statement continues. As a reminder: The federal government and the state of Lower Saxony rescued the financially struggling Meyer Werft in 2024. To this end, both acquired 40 percent of the shares each. A total of $470 million was invested for this purpose. A credit line totaling $3 billion has also been secured.
