In India, construction of the first high-speed trains is beginning: Rail and metro car manufacturer BEML, based in Bangalore, will produce the first two prototype trains and is relying on system technology from Knorr-Bremse. The company will supply brake and entry systems as well as climate control and sanitary systems.

The trains from BEML will establish a new travel and transport concept in India. They are designed for speeds of up to 280 km/h and are set to operate between Mumbai and Ahmedabad in western India, covering a high-speed route of 558 kilometers. The corridor, which includes a 22-kilometer-long underwater tunnel, is currently being constructed as part of a comprehensive mobility initiative. This is expected to significantly reduce travel times between two of India's most important commercial cities. Further high-speed corridors are being evaluated.

Custom system solutions from 2026

BEML will initially produce two prototypes of the new train platform. Knorr-Bremse will begin supplying customer-specific system solutions starting in the second quarter of 2026. While BEML will be responsible for the service of the trains, Knorr-Bremse Rail Services will be responsible for the maintenance, servicing, and spare parts supply for the supplier's technology over a period of 15 years. The current contract for equipping the two train prototypes could be followed by an order for an additional ten train sets from BEML.
