Whether for vacation or business trips and professional commuting—Europe-wide long-distance rail travel is gaining more momentum as a sustainable transportation option. In this context, new vehicle platforms are being developed based on clear requirements: fleets must be renewed while increasing flexibility, efficiency, and availability. At the same time, the market is changing: alongside traditional state railways, new operator and leasing models are gaining importance. Vehicles are in demand that can quickly adapt to different operational requirements and be used in multiple countries. This is where the Vectouro platform comes into play. The vehicles are designed for cross-border intercity and long-distance travel in Europe, particularly in Central and Northern Europe, and operate on modernized routes as well as on semi-high-speed corridors with speeds of up to 230 km/h (approx. 143 mph). The train concept simplifies operations in various countries—offering operators lower approval efforts, greater planning reliability, and increased flexibility.

For reliable operation of the trains across different networks, stable and efficient performance is crucial. Knorr-Bremse contributes to this with braking and boarding systems, which the supplier has been delivering to Siemens Mobility since the second quarter of 2026.

Reliable Systems

"The platform architecture places high demands on integration and operational reliability. Our technology is designed for this and ensures that the Vectouro platform can realize its potential in European operations. A key success factor is the trusted collaboration between the teams of Knorr-Bremse and Siemens Mobility," explains Harald Schneider, CEO of the Knorr-Bremse Rail Division.

Even today, the company equips the Vectron locomotives, which pull the passenger trains, with energy-efficient compressed air supply for the braking systems as well as brake controls. As part of the contract for equipping the Vectouro platform, Knorr-Bremse now additionally provides, among other things, bogie equipment, modern actuators, and the anti-slip protection system, which ensures secure traction on the tracks and precise braking.

The pressure-tight, long-distance proven Knorr-Bremse swing sliding door systems with boarding aids promote quick, safe passenger exchange and punctual departures. Together, these systems make a significant contribution to ensuring that rail traffic functions reliably across national borders and continues to gain attractiveness.
