The strategic importance of industrial data spaces for European industry is growing in the face of international competitive pressure and developments in the field of artificial intelligence. The VDMA's Manufacturing-X forum has therefore produced a 60-page guide aimed primarily at small and medium-sized companies. It describes the role of data rooms in mechanical and plant engineering against the backdrop of European regulations, scalable data-based business models and industrial AI.

This guide provides all companies with a comprehensive overview of data rooms and helps them gain a thorough understanding of the subject. It examines a wide range of aspects, including economic, technical, and legal considerations.

It's about much more than sharing data At its core, a data room is the basic infrastructure for the secure, sovereign and interoperable sharing of data across company boundaries. While valuable data is handed over to large platforms, in data rooms it remains with the company, which decides on usage rights for others.

However, the business benefits of data rooms do not arise from data exchange per se, but from data-based products and services, which are becoming increasingly important in mechanical engineering beyond the sale of physical products. These include predictive maintenance and remote support, as well as digital twins and data-based lifecycle management. Bundling these functions creates scalable business models such as subscription or service-based revenue models.

Industrial AI requires large volumes of data that are of high quality, standardized and can be used in a legally compliant manner. Industrial AI unfolds its full potential when the structural requirements are in place to share and use data interoperably across company boundaries.
