China's largest DRAM manufacturer, CXMT, had a spectacular start at its stock market debut in Shanghai. The share price rose by 466 percent, and the market value reached nearly 488 billion USD. CXMT plays a key role in China's efforts to become more independent in memory chips. However, the company is still technologically behind the global leaders.

The stock of China's largest DRAM manufacturer was listed on the stock exchange on July 27, 2026. The issue price was 8.66 yuan, and by the end of the first trading day, the stock was priced at 49 yuan. This increased the market value of the memory manufacturer from around 579 billion to 3.3 trillion yuan (approx. $454 billion). CXMT immediately became the most valuable listed company on China's mainland stock exchanges.

The IPO itself already set a record: CXMT raised 57.92 billion yuan, approximately 8.6 billion USD. It was the largest IPO of a Chinese semiconductor company to date and also the largest IPO in Asia so far this year. We reported on this in advance.

The significant price movement should, however, be viewed with caution. At the start of trading, only 6.73 percent of the expanded share capital was freely tradable. The limited supply likely amplified the upward momentum. Market observers warned Reuters of speculative overvaluation and pointed to the strong fluctuations that traditionally characterize the memory market.

From Start-Up to the Fourth-Largest DRAM Manufacturer

CXMT was founded in 2016 in Hefei and has developed into China's largest manufacturer of DRAM memory chips within ten years. After Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Micron, the company now ranks fourth in the global market. According to the IPO prospectus, CXMT achieved a market share of approximately 7.7 percent in 2025.

DRAM chips serve as memory in smartphones, PCs, servers, and numerous other electronic systems. The expansion of AI data centers has significantly increased the demand for high-performance memory. CXMT expects revenue between 110 and 120 billion yuan (approx. $15.1 to $16.5 billion). for the first half of 2026. This would mean more than a sevenfold increase compared to the same period last year.

The product portfolio now includes DDR4, DDR5, LPDDR4X, and LPDDR5X. For its DDR5 modules, CXMT specifies data rates of up to 8,000 Mbit/s and memory capacities of 16 or 24 Gbit. According to the company, the LPDDR5X products achieve up to 10,667 Mbit/s.

In HBM, CXMT Remains Behind

The rise to the fourth-largest DRAM provider does not yet mean that CXMT has caught up technologically with the three market leaders. Particularly in High Bandwidth Memory, or HBM, the Chinese manufacturer remains behind. These especially fast and wide bandwidth memories are a critical component of AI accelerators, such as those from Nvidia.

Samsung and especially SK Hynix have longstanding manufacturing experience and established customer relationships in this area. Micron has also expanded its position in the HBM market. CXMT, on the other hand, primarily benefits from the growing demand among Chinese customers for domestic alternatives to foreign memory manufacturers.

US export controls are also making it more difficult for CXMT to access modern equipment and technologies. In June 2026, the US Department of Defense added the company to its list of Chinese military companies. A possible inclusion in the US Entity List is also under consideration.

Billions for Manufacturing and Development

CXMT receives support from China's state-backed financing system for the semiconductor industry. Before the IPO, 36.29 percent of the shares were held by state investors. These include investment companies from Hefei and Anhui Province, as well as China's state semiconductor fund, the so-called Big Fund.

The proceeds from the IPO are to be invested in expanding production capacities, modernizing manufacturing, and developing new DRAM technologies. According to IPO documents analyzed by Trendforce, plans include expanding existing wafer production lines, advancing DRAM technology, and pursuing research programs.

The conditions are favorable for CXMT. Trendforce predicts that the memory market will remain tight and prices could continue to rise until the end of 2027. At the same time, many buyers are striving to broaden their supplier base. CXMT could benefit from this.

The 466 percent jump in share price initially shows how high investors' expectations are—not that CXMT has already caught up technologically with Samsung, SK Hynix, and Micron. However, the IPO provides the company with the financial resources to further close the gap.
