Chip company AMD is investing up to five billion US dollars in the AI company Anthropic. In return, the largest OpenAI competitor is building new data centers with AMD processors, while AMD uses the Claude language model for its own development.

The two California companies plan to massively build new computing capacities to train and operate complex models for artificial intelligence. To financially support this extensive collaboration, AMD has pledged to invest up to five billion US dollars in Anthropic.

The demand for computing power for AI is currently growing rapidly across the entire market. Anthropic requires massive server infrastructures to further develop its in-house language model Claude and to quickly process users' daily requests. With the new agreement, AMD secures an important major customer and aims to demonstrate that the company's latest hardware can withstand the enormous demands of large data centers in the long term. The agreement is a strategic step for both parties to achieve a stronger position in the highly competitive technology landscape.

Expansion on a Gigawatt Scale

Anthropic plans to install AMD's new Helios servers for operating its language model. The energy demand of these new server farms is expected to reach up to two gigawatts. The partners plan to physically build the first gigawatt of capacity in the first half of 2027.

Anthropic uses graphics processors from the Instinct MI450 series, specifically the MI455X model. The manufacturer combines these specialized computing units with its Epyc main processors featuring the Venice architecture, customized networking technology, and its own ROCm software platform. The choice of this platform underscores the aim to establish powerful alternatives in the market. Even before this significant step, Anthropic had been utilizing chips from the previous generation MI355X for its hardware systems.

Tom Brown, CEO of Anthropic, emphasizes the necessity of this massive expansion: "Access to computing power is crucial to keep Claude at the forefront and meet the demand of our customers." Through the extensive partnership with AMD across all system levels, the company secures the required capacities and optimizes them specifically for training and operating its own language model.

Mutual Technological Integration

The collaboration between the two corporations goes far beyond the mere sale and use of hardware. Both companies are launching a multi-year technical partnership from which both sides aim to benefit professionally. AMD's development teams, on the other hand, intend to use Claude intensively to optimize workflows for AMD GPUs and to accelerate the development of ROCm. Moreover, the chip manufacturer plans to roll out Claude extensively within its own technical and product development teams. This deep integration of workflows is intended to help both parties advance their respective core products more purposefully.
