From voice and object recognition to image classification, predictive maintenance, and autonomous control: Artificial Intelligence (AI) applications require highly powerful electronic systems. Only modern semiconductors and sensors, scalable embedded systems, and efficient connectivity make AI solutions possible across industry, mobility, energy, and healthcare. At the same time, the growing adoption of AI is drastically increasing the demands on computing power, energy efficiency, and cyber resilience. From November 10 to 13, the electronics industry will showcase the technologies driving this evolution at the electronica trade fair in Munich.

The electronics industry provides the technological foundation for the All Electric Society, enabling intelligent applications in energy supply, mobility, industrial automation, and smart buildings. "Artificial Intelligence places entirely new demands on electronic systems. What is required are powerful, energy-efficient, and secure solutions where hardware, software, and connectivity interact seamlessly," says Caroline Pannier, Project Director of electronica. "It is exactly these developments that will take center stage at electronica."

AI as an Accelerator and a Stress Test for Business and Infrastructure

To remain innovative and competitive, companies today must integrate AI into their products, services, and processes. According to the German Economic Institute (IW), 66.3 percent of large companies are already utilizing AI, while roughly half of medium-sized enterprises are doing the same. However, small companies have the most catching up to do: only 35.6 percent currently use AI in their operations.

At the same time, AI is creating entirely new possibilities: machines and vehicles are becoming smarter, power grids more efficient, medical diagnoses more precise, and devices more autonomous. However, this growing deployment of AI also drives up energy consumption and escalates cybersecurity requirements.

Energy Efficiency and Cyber Resilience as Key Criteria

Due to the intensified use of AI, modern electronic systems must deliver massive computing power while operating with extreme energy efficiency and thermal reliability. Furthermore, as increasingly connected systems exchange vast amounts of data and receive regular software updates, the attack surface for cyber risks expands.

 As a result, energy efficiency and cyber resilience are evolving from isolated, secondary requirements into central system criteria. Additionally, the EU’s Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) is increasing regulatory pressure on companies. Approaches like "Security-by-Design" must therefore be anchored in the very architecture phase and integrated across hardware, software, interfaces, updates, and operational concepts.

Hardware, Software, and Application Layers Are Merging

The development of modern electronics is increasingly shifting from optimizing individual components to building integrated, complete systems. What matters now is not just the performance of a single processor, sensor, or module, but rather the seamless interaction between hardware, software, operating systems, connectivity, security, and the application layer. Customers expect products that are quick to integrate, easy to scale, and simple to update throughout their entire lifecycle. This raises the bar for system design, software quality, and lifecycle management. For the electronics industry, this shift also opens up significant opportunities to enter new markets and position themselves competitively for the future.

Electronica as a Platform for AI, Cyber Resilience, and Energy Efficiency

As the world's leading trade fair for electronics, electronica brings together key players representing the entire spectrum of the industry. Around 3,500 exhibitors from approximately 60 countries will demonstrate how individual components are being transformed into integrated, intelligent, and secure complete systems. The spotlight will be on the core themes of Artificial Intelligence, energy efficiency, and cyber resilience. A comprehensive supporting program of forums and conferences will provide additional opportunities for networking and knowledge transfer. Running parallel to this, SEMICON Europa will occupy two and a half halls, offering deep insights into the complete semiconductor manufacturing value chain.
