The Skanska Group was founded in Sweden in 1887 as a concrete manufacturer. With approximately 27,000 employees and revenue of 177 billion SEK in 2024, Skanska is committed to sustainable construction projects. In the cementation sector, the focus is on highly specialized manufacturing processes for building components. Here, the manufacturing department faced a key challenge: a lack of reliable data. While production processes could be carried out, they could not be precisely analyzed or optimized. “We didn’t have any real KPIs or specific measurement methods before,” explains Leigh Wells, Production Manager at Skanska.
To overcome this challenge, Skanska turned to Werma, a manufacturer of signaling technology. With its WeAssist solution—comprising signal towers and a cloud-based platform—Skanska aimed to take the decisive step toward digitized manufacturing. However, the introduction of a new system also posed an additional cultural challenge for the workforce. Employees were initially skeptical of the new technology: “There was a feeling that the system would monitor their performance like ‘Big Brother,’” reports Wells.
