As Single Pair Ethernet and All-Ethernet architectures for software-defined vehicles are increasingly being used in the automotive sector, the need for secure, scalable data connections is growing. For this purpose, Microchip offers the LAN878x and LAN888x series of single-pair Ethernet/SPE-PHY transceivers, which are available in 100BASE-T1, 1000BASE-T1 and dual-speed 100/1000BASE-T1 variants.

Hardware-based MACsec security according to IEEE 802.1AE 2018 is integrated into the PHYs, ensuring frame-level confidentiality, data integrity and protection against replay/repeat attacks without increasing system latency or software complexity. Native support for Time Sensitive Networking enables the low-latency deterministic communication required for ADAS, zone gateways and safety-critical control systems

Designed According to ISO 26262 ASIL-B

In addition to safety and performance, LAN878x and LAN888x offer enhanced functional safety designed for ISO 26262 ASIL-B compliant systems. On-chip diagnostics and connection monitoring increase transparency, speed up fault detection and support stronger safety mechanisms at system level than conventional SPE-PHY solutions.

To simplify platform scalability and design reuse, the new PHYs offer pin-compatible SKUs for 100BASE-T1 and 1000BASE-T1 variants as well as SGMII and RGMII host interfaces. Developers can reuse existing hardware designs and scale network bandwidth to meet evolving performance requirements.

High Reliability

The LAN878x series comprises the LAN8781, LAN8781M, LAN8782 and LAN8782M; the LAN888x series comprises the LAN8881, LAN8881M, LAN8882, LAN8882M, LAN8883, LAN8883M, LAN8884 and LAN8884M. Devices with the suffix "M" support MACsec security. All PHYs are designed for high reliability, with a maximum junction temperature of 300 °F. They also support Automotive Grade 1 operating conditions.

The LAN878x and LAN888x series are available as samples in limited quantities. The company offers hardware evaluation platforms for the components. There are also SGMII, USB and PCIe plug-in cards as well as Linux software drivers. (se)
