Schaeffler AG and Spire Global (Spire), a global leader in satellite data, analysis and intelligence, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop subsystems for space hardware, satellite platforms and advanced radio frequency and environmental sensors. The partnership combines Schaeffler's precision engineering and manufacturing know-how with Spire's expertise in satellite platforms and extensive aerospace experience. The aim is nothing less than to create a new standard for the European space industry. Accordingly, the partners intend to establish an independent European business segment for hardware and missions by the end of this decade—industrialized in Germany, tested in orbit and deployable on a large scale for missions in the areas of defence, weather, civil security and critical infrastructure. The collaboration will initially focus on securing and scaling supply chains for critical satellite subsystems, according to the statement. In parallel, the companies will explore ways to industrialize satellite bus systems for stand-alone constellation programs, with Schaeffler taking the lead in scaling precision manufacturing.

Schaeffler is Strictly Pursuing Its New Strategic Orientation

Spire will contribute the platform architecture, the on-board software and the operational expertise. Last but not least, Schaeffler has defined the aerospace and defense sectors as new growth areas as part of its "Strategic Ambition 2035". The Herzogenaurach-based company brings decades of experience in the automotive and industrial sectors, manufacturing excellence and established relationships with European customers in the defense industry and government clients to the partnership. Since 2013, Spire has developed, built and launched over 240 satellites on over 40 rocket launches. Spire currently has the capacity to manufacture 300 to 400 satellites per year at sites in the United States and Europe. This manufacturing capacity on two continents is a key differentiator from other commercial satellite data, analysis and intelligence providers. The collaboration aims to accelerate Schaeffler's entry into the space sector while solidifying Spire's commitment to Germany. In May 2025, Spire opened a satellite manufacturing facility in Munich— building on this foundation, the collaboration with Schaeffler expands Spire's European manufacturing presence and gives it access to national defense customers and government clients across the continent.
