C. Otto Gehrckens: New sealing material for the food industry

With the new development "AF 680," the seal manufacturer C. Otto Gehrckens (COG) is expanding its range to include an FEPM material for critical areas of use in food production and its peripheries.

For the formulation, a specially designed AFLAS-based polymer was used. The special sealing material compounded by COG is the first to have industry-relevant approval under FDA 21. CFR 177.2600 and is reliable in use with SIP (Sterilization-in-Place) and CIP (Clean-in-Place) processes. Unlike peroxide-crosslinked FKM high-performance materials, this new FEPM compound can also be used in increasingly demanding aggressive cleaning cycles with caustic solutions (bases) at high temperatures (about 140 °C), according to the manufacturer. Even during high-temperature SIP processes at about 150 °C, the volume swelling of the new FEPM sealing material is so minimal that this compound can be installed in the tight installation spaces of sterile couplings, which conform to hygienic design standards.

As a high-performance elastomer from the AFLAS series, AF 680 is extremely resistant to a variety of different chemicals, including flavorings and essential oils, according to the manufacturer. Compared to many peroxide-cured high-performance FKM or even the extremely high-priced FFKM (Perfluor) materials, it is available at a more affordable price. A possible operating temperature of up to +230 °C completes the performance profile of AF 680. This material offers designers and users a dependable solution for many applications in the food industry.
