The Eclipse Foundation and the German Association of the Automotive Industry are expanding their global ecosystem to accelerate the development of software-defined vehicles. The Memorandum of Understanding for the open-source project "Eclipse S-CORE" now includes 32 companies – at the start of the collaboration in June 2025, there were eleven.

"Through the joint development of non-differentiating software, manufacturers and suppliers can focus their resources on what truly matters: delivering unique, customer-oriented experiences," says Marcus Bollig, managing director of the VDA. Collaborative work in an open-source software ecosystem with manufacturer-neutral governance reduces fragmentation, improves interoperability, and shares the burden of developing complex, safety-critical software.

The new signatories include 42dot, Accenture, AVL, Capgemini, Coretura, Cummins, ECARX, Elektrobit, Infineon, Lear, LG Electronics, Michelin, Mobis, Qualcomm, QNX, Red Hat, Schaeffler, Stellantis, Traton, T-Systems, and Useblocks. They join the founding members Aumovio, BMW, Bosch, ETAS, Hella, Mercedes-Benz, Qorix, Valeo, Vector, Volkswagen, and ZF. The companies come from Europe, Asia, and America, representing the entire automotive value chain.

"Market leaders recognize that trustworthy foundations in open source are essential for developing the next generation of safe, intelligent, and connected vehicles," evaluates Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, regarding the growing interest.

Up to 40 Percent Efficiency Gains Expected

The participating companies expect that collaborative open-source development will bring significant advantages: up to 40 percent less effort for the development, integration, and maintenance of non-differentiating software, up to 30 percent faster time-to-market through shared components in automotive quality, improved interoperability between suppliers and vehicle platforms, as well as greater sustainability and long-term maintainability of the software.

First Public Version Available

At the center of the collaboration is Eclipse S-Core, an open-source software stack for the automotive industry being developed within the Eclipse SDV Working Group. S-Core integrates several SDV projects into a reference implementation and a tool environment designed for certifiable, production-ready software.

In November 2025, Eclipse S-Core released its first public version (0.5), fulfilling an important part of the original memorandum of understanding. A complete version is planned for the end of 2026, targeting vehicle programs that will come to market no later than 2030.

ETAS Announces Production-Ready Distribution

ETAS, a subsidiary of Bosch, founding member of the Eclipse SDV Working Group, and signatory of the VDA memorandum of understanding, is committed as one of the main contributors to the S-Core project. The company will offer a production-ready distribution based on S-Core as part of the ETAS Vehicle Platform Suite. This includes the integration of additional open-source components from the Eclipse SDV ecosystem, support for industry-standard tools, and alignment with modern CI/CD processes.

According to the foundation, Eclipse SDV provides a sustainable, transparent, and scalable model for industry-wide software innovations. By establishing common software foundations within an open framework, the participants create a shared basis for innovation that aims to reduce redundancy, enhance safety, and shorten time-to-market.
