Cellcentric has presented a new fuel cell system for heavy-duty vehicles. The "BZA375" has a continuous output of up to 503 horsepower. According to Cellcentric, fuel consumption is 20 percent lower than the previous model. According to the company, a fully loaded 44 short tons truck can drive with less than 13 pounds of hydrogen per 62 miles under real driving conditions.

The company has reduced waste heat by around 40 percent with a net output of 402 horsepower compared to the previous model. In turn, the power density is 40 percent higher. In addition, the new system is designed as a "single system package" and requires significantly fewer components and interfaces. Previously, two systems supplied the electricity for the electric drive in heavy-duty trucks. The new fuel cell system weighs less than 1.1 pounds.

The company puts the service life at 25,000 hours. This corresponds to a ten-year service life in a heavy goods vehicle and is comparable to modern diesel engines.

Cellcentric has started prototype production of the BZA375. Customers can test and validate these themselves. Series production is scheduled to start at the beginning of the decade. The fuel cell system is also suitable for other applications, such as coaches, stationary power generation, rail transport and mining.

"BZA375 is specifically tailored to the needs of long-haul heavy-duty trucks and is ideal for other applications with similar requirements," says Nicholas Loughlan, Head of Engineering at Cellcentric. "We at Cellcentric are deliberately positioned as an independent Tier 1 supplier and are open to partnerships with all OEMs who are driving the decarbonization of their product range."
