Tesla suffered the first decline in its electric car deliveries in over a decade in 2024. The U.S. manufacturer led by tech billionaire Elon Musk delivered just under 1.79 million vehicles to customers. This was 19,355 less than in 2023.

Musk had promised a slight increase. To achieve this, Tesla would have had to deliver another 515,000 cars to customers in the final quarter. Despite a sales offensive, only 495,570 vehicles were delivered in the end.

Musk himself said that he sees Tesla "between two growth waves." He is focusing primarily on technology for autonomous driving and presented a prototype of a robotaxi without a steering wheel and pedals in October. With his proximity to Trump, Musk could put pressure for more favorable regulatory conditions for self-driving cars. Meanwhile, critics of Tesla point to an aging model lineup of the industry leader, with only the niche model e-pickup Cybertruck recently added.

BYD with a strong increase

The Chinese competitor BYD, now in a neck-and-neck race with Tesla, increased sales of pure electric cars by 41 percent to 1.76 million vehicles last year. The rapid growth at BYD contrasts with the weakness of other car manufacturers, primarily from Europe. While Volkswagen, Nissan, and Stellantis, for example, are struggling with declining sales in China, the local hero BYD could soon become the world's best-selling electric car brand.
