Optimized wire drawing is ready for industry right away

The project is an absolute success, celebrate the participants from Chemische Fabrik Wocklum Gebr. Hertin GmbH & Co. KG, where the project was coordinated on the industrial side. Thanks to the good cooperation and the careful selection of team members, HPPL are already ready for industrial use. The first wires pulled with the new lubricant have already been sold and are successfully in use. In addition to the Fraunhofer IAP and Chemische Fabrik Wocklum, F. Brüninghaus & Söhne GmbH & Co., Fröndenberger Drahtwerk GmbH, and Staku Anlagenbau GmbH were also involved in the project, as we learn. The new lubricants mean that the drawing dies are only minimally stressed and thus last longer. This conserves resources and the environment, as specialists from F. Brüninghaus note. Staku comments that the HPPL lubricants offer promising possibilities for pursuing, for example, a path to minimal lubrication. Initial spray trials have already delivered outstanding results, it is said.

Expanded possibilities for metal forming and processing

In Germany, there are just over 40 wire drawing companies for iron and steel in operation, as well as an additional about 120 processors who partially conduct the drawing processes internally and can directly benefit from the HPPL polymer lubricants. Therefore, the project members assume that over 10 million euros per year can be saved when HPPL is used. The polymers could also be individually tailored to the specific application – for example, for alloys or wires with special coatings. However, the potential of polymer lubricants extends far beyond wire drawing. Other areas of metal forming and processing could also benefit from the development. Consider, for example, tube drawing or cold massive forming. Because in these processes too, lubricants play a crucial role. Therefore, Chemie Wocklum can already produce sample quantities of the lubricant in the three-digit kilogram scale and make them available to interested parties for industrial tests.
