GF becomes part of a major industrial decarbonization project in Europe: The company is supplying the global steel group SSAB with a turnkey, maritime water extraction system and an onshore piping system for its new "Green Steel" plant in Luleå (Sweden).

SSAB is building a modern, electrified steelworks with a capacity of 2.8 million short tons per year. High-quality products are to be manufactured there with a significantly lower climate impact. To ensure a reliable supply of cooling water, the GF Industry and Infrastructure Flow Solutions division is supplying a system based on its Weholite solution. The system will transport water to the pumping station on the coast, from where the cooling water will be pumped to the steel mill's heat exchangers for use in the manufacturing process.

"This project is closely aligned with our strategic focus on higher value applications that enable more sustainable industrial processes. It also underscores our ability to deliver complex turnkey solutions as we continue to sharpen our portfolio and implementation expertise in markets with long-term growth potential," says Thomas Hary, President of GF Industry and Infrastructure Flow Solutions.

The contract awarded by NYAB, an important subcontractor in the project, comprises pipelines with large diameters from DN 800 to DN 63 inches and a total length of around 7.5 miles, including fittings. GF will also be responsible for the welding, assembly and pressure testing of the installed system. The project is scheduled to run from the second quarter of 2026 to the fourth quarter of 2027.
