Since it was commissioned in 1964, around 250 million metric tons of hot-rolled steel have been produced in thyssenkrupp Steel's hot strip mill 2. The hot strip mill, which is around 700 meters (~2,300 feet) long, is one of the largest production facilities in German industry. This is because around five million tons of high-quality sheet steel - especially for the automotive industry - can be rolled there every year. In the hot rolling process, so-called slabs are first heated to around 1,250 °C (~2,282 °F) and then transformed into thin steel strip in several rolling stages. In this way, a 25-centimetre-thick slab (~10 inches thick) can be turned into a steel strip just 1.5 millimetres (~0.06 inches) thick and up to 1.7 kilometers long (~1 mile), as the company emphasizes. The end product is called hot-rolled wide strip, wound into coils, and forms the basis for premium qualities - especially for the automotive industry and electromobility. In the hot strip mill, the basic product properties are defined by rolling pressure and temperature control; certain parameters are controlled down to a millionth of a millimeter during the rolling process.

Hot-Rolled Steel Strip From the Most Sustainable Production

With an annual capacity of around five million tons, Hot Strip Mill 2 processes widths of up to 2,030 millimetres (~80 inches) and thicknesses of 1.5 to 25.4 millimetres (~0.06 to 1 inch). With the new walking beam furnace, which went into operation in November 2022, slabs are transported particularly gently during the energy-efficient heating process - this ensures flawless surfaces, ideal for demanding outer skin qualities and high-strength multiphase steels. In the future, the furnace can also be operated with hydrogen to reduce CO2 emissions. The water management system for the cooling process in the hot strip mill was comprehensively modernized by the spring of this year. Thanks to a recirculation rate of 97 percent for around 200 million cubic meters of water per year (~53 Billion Gallons), the plant now operates in a resource-saving manner and ensures maximum process stability. And thanks to the recovery of waste kiln heat to supply heat to hundreds of homes in the Lower Rhine region, Hot Strip Plant 2 not only stands for maximum efficiency and quality, but also for a sustainably designed production process.
