Wittmann technology achieves high quality at low manufacturing costs.

Tomaz dos Santos and Marcos Cardenal from Wittmann Battenfeld do Brasil have known each other for 33 years. Although initially convinced by Wittmann Battenfeld, investments were first made in injection molding machines from a Chinese supplier due to cost reasons. However, the quality left much to be desired. Therefore, now only machines from the Wittmann Group are being brought into the plant. Due to the very high process stability and quality consistency, Brazilians thus produce most economically in the end. Additionally, there is the proximity of the service. As the only supplier on the market, Wittmann is able to offer complete packages, encompassing the entire injection molding production process from raw material preparation and supply, injection molding, automation, and mold temperature control, to inline recycling and digitization. Therefore, the entire peripheral equipment for drying, conveying, and dosing the plastic granulates at Thomriss, as well as the linear robots for demolding and placing the injection molded parts, also comes from Wittmann. Not least, increasing quality and productivity demands require more and more automation. A new large central system for granulate drying and supply from Wittmann will soon be installed. This measure also contributes to further increasing efficiency and sustainability.

PET is becoming increasingly attractive for cosmetic packaging.

Many products are made from various polymers. For example, in the case of dropper bottle caps with an integrated pipette, two different materials are used. A TPE (thermoplastic elastomer) is used for the flexible dome, and the screw cap is made of PP (polypropylene). Both components are produced in multi-cavity molds and assembled in the factory immediately after injection molding. After extensive testing, the two development partners selected the materials and optimized the process together. The end product can therefore be produced very cheaply. However, wherever the required functionality allows, Thomriss pursues a strict mono-material strategy, as customers are very focused on sustainability—typical for the cosmetics sector. This is precisely why a relatively new material for Thomriss is rapidly making its way into the product portfolio: PET (polyethylene terephthalate), known from beverage bottles. PET packaging is characterized by transparency, high rigidity, and durability. "For us, recycling is crucial. There is already a closed loop for the material. We are designing more and more packaging for PET—even for high-volume applications," emphasizes dos Santos.
