It is a major Brazilian manufacturer of cosmetic packaging, specializing in eyebrow pencils and mascara. His daily challenge is to combine high-quality surfaces with sustainable and cost-effective production. The injection molding equipment supplier Wittmann supports him with machines, automation, peripherals, and application technology consulting.

Impeccably concealed beauty enhancers from the clean room

Dos Santos is particularly proud of the large clean room in the newly built headquarters in Lençóis Paulista, almost 280 kilometers northwest of the city of São Paulo, which was established ten years ago. On the table in the large, bright conference room, there are various packaging parts, including lipstick cases, mascara tubes, makeup jars, and dropper bottles for liquids. More than 50 different packaging formats are offered. For injection molding production, this is an extremely high number. It must be considered that, for example, a single lipstick requires at least five tools, and each product can be ordered in numerous variants. All products are also available in a very wide color spectrum and with color gradients. Many packaging parts are additionally printed, coated, or metallized. Notable are the pink-anodized lip gloss and eyeliner containers, which shine particularly elegantly. "This is only possible with highly precise and very clean production," emphasizes dos Santos. Every tiny speck of dust and even the slightest unevenness would become clearly visible after metallization and lead to rejection.

Smartpower injection molding machines operate efficiently and economically.

The basis for the perfect surfaces is the high replication accuracy during injection molding. This is ensured by 44 injection molding machines with clamping forces ranging from 120 to 240 tons. Almost all of them are Smartpower machines from Wittmann. With 65 percent of the produced packaging parts, injection molding processing is the largest production area on site. The production managers appreciate the combination of precise and dynamic machine movement and high efficiency in plastic part production. This makes the relatively expensive production of cosmetic packaging economically viable. The Drive-on-Demand drive technology combines responsive servo motors with powerful constant pumps. According to the manufacturer, this results in very fast and at the same time very precise machine movements with minimal energy consumption. An additional energy-saving effect is produced by the Kers energy recovery system, which converts kinetic energy into electrical energy during braking. This electricity can then be used within the machine, for example, for cylinder heating.
