The light-sensitive polyimide coating Photoneece for power semiconductors is now offered by manufacturer Toray Industries in a version without N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone (NMP). This reduces the potential environmental impacts of this organic compound. Tests with samples are currently being conducted at a renowned manufacturer of power semiconductors, which are used in large electric vehicles, trains, and power plants.

In manufacturing, such semiconductor devices are wrapped with an insulating film to protect them from heat. The insulation usually consists of polyimide materials in an NMP solvent. However, there are efforts in Europe and the United States to limit the use of NMP as it can harm the environment.

Heat resistant up to 500 °C.

Over the past years, Toray has developed a technology for the synthesis of polyimide in which the proportion of NMP is below the detection limit of 5 ppm. This new Photoneece is heat-resistant up to 500 °C. This makes it particularly suitable for power semiconductors whose manufacturing process requires a lot of heat.

These power semiconductors also work with high voltages, and the insulating layer must also withstand higher temperatures during operation. Particularly thick polyimide films are necessary for these applications. Photoneece permits a layer thickness of more than 15 micrometers, which is more than twice as thick as that of conventional materials, according to the manufacturer. Despite this thickness, it is possible to produce equally fine semiconductor structures during exposure as with conventional materials. The new material also adheres very well to silicon, copper, and other base materials. It is a good electrical insulator and is very chemically resistant.
