The Morssinkhof-Rymoplast Group is one of the leading providers in the field of plastic recycling and sustainable circular economy. The Dutch family-owned company has over 50 years of experience and employs around 800 people. It recycles nearly 500,000 tons of plastic annually, as emphasized. With an investment of around 30 million euros (approx. $32.5 million)  in a site of Rymoplast Deutschland GmbH in Markranstädt near Leipzig (Germany), the group made a clear commitment in 2022 to expand post-consumer recycling (PCR) in Germany. There, approximately 30,000 tons of film waste are now processed annually into high-quality plastic regranulate.

Recycling Stands and Falls with Thermal Management

The goal in Markranstädt is ambitious! High-quality regranulate, comparable in quality to new material, is to be produced from used LDPE commercial and industrial films (LDPE = Low-Density Polyethylene). The process is complex: the delivered film bales are shredded, washed, dried, and finally extruded, with the extrudate being cut into small granulate pellets. Compressed air, water, and a reliable cooling supply are the three pillars on which process stability rests. "If one of them fails, production comes to a halt," explains Mark Langenhof, Business Development & Application Engineer at Rymoplast Deutschland. However, precise temperature control of the melt is particularly crucial in the extrusion process. If the cooling is not correct, the granulate sticks together and the quality rapidly deteriorates.

Precise Cooling for Extruder and Peripherals Needed

When it came to planning the new plant in an existing but completely gutted hall, Rymoplast turned to Technotrans. The contact had already been established through previous projects of the Dutch parent company, where Technotrans (then still under the gwk brand) had successfully implemented cooling systems. "We were in a situation where we had to plan virtually from scratch," says Langenhof. However, this provided the freedom to optimally dimension the system from the ground up, but also required a partner who could not only supply components but also develop a coherent overall concept. Rymoplast defined specific requirements: the recycling specialist needed a system capable of providing a cooling capacity of 1.5 megawatts in its final expansion stage for cooling the Erema extruders and the periphery.
