The CEO of Mercedes-Benz, Ola Källenius, is running for a second term as President of Acea, Europe's top car lobby association. The 56-year-old was elected by the lobby group, as the association announced on Wednesday. Källenius said that climate targets could only be achieved if they were accompanied by competitiveness and resilient supply chains.

Källenius called for a more pragmatic course. "Flexibility, technological openness and targeted measures for cars, vans, trucks and buses remain essential," said the manager. There is a lot at stake.

There is currently a fierce battle at EU level over future regulations for the car industry. In the letter, Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz had asked the EU Commission to correct the regulation on the so-called combustion engine phase-out. The Chancellor has received support for this from Munich (Germany), among others. Speaking to journalists in Brussels, BMW boss Oliver Zipse said that the contents of Merz's letter "correspond pretty much exactly to our requirements."

Examples he cited included openness to technology, highly efficient combustion engines and incentives to use environmentally friendly materials. "This is very much in line with our idea of what is right for this industry," said Zipse.
