As part of its economic and sustainability strategy, China aims to increasingly shift freight transport to rail. This shift is driving up the demand for longer, heavier, and smarter freight trains that can be operated safely and efficiently. To support this development, Knorr-Bremse and the China Academy of Railway Sciences (CARS) have signed a memorandum of understanding. Under this agreement, the partners intend to focus on digital solutions, driver assistance systems, and braking technologies to advance the safety, efficiency, and performance of China’s rail freight transport.

Focus on Digital Train Architectures and Predictive Maintenance

Building on more than 20 years of collaboration between CARS and Knorr-Bremse, the China Freight Cooperation Program expands the existing product-oriented cooperation to include a comprehensive technology partnership. Efforts to accelerate the digitalization and smart development of rail freight transport focus on several technology areas. In the area of digitalization, the primary focus is on digital train architectures, predictive maintenance, condition monitoring of freight cars, and digital automatic couplers. The latter are also being prepared for market launch in Europe. In addition to coupling-based solutions, the partners will rely on wireless, radio-based functions powered by vehicle-mounted energy storage systems. These are intended to enable improved fleet monitoring as well as the optimization of maintenance and operational processes.

In addition, the partners will develop driver assistance systems to improve the energy efficiency and performance of freight train fleets. To do so, they will build on Knorr-Bremse solutions such as “Leader,” which are already in use in Europe, the U.S., and Australia. In addition, both companies will work on braking systems tailored to the demanding requirements of long-haul and heavy-duty transport.

Modernization of Rail Transportation Is Gaining Momentum

The modernization of rail freight transport is gaining momentum worldwide. The most comprehensive and technologically advanced initiatives to date are planned in Europe. The original equipment market there alone for the modernization of up to 500,000 freight cars is estimated at around 25 billion euros (28.75 billion US dollars).

China, which has one of the world’s largest fleets of freight cars, is pursuing similarly ambitious modernization programs and measures to shift traffic to rail. This results in a market potential comparable to that of the European market. The U.S., as the world’s third-largest rail market, will also increasingly adopt next-generation digital technologies in rail freight transport.
