Industrial applications require not only efficiency, but also forward-looking protection solutions. Enclosures made of materials such as polyester, polycarbonate, aluminum and stainless steel are therefore available for different applications and purposes. There are also enclosures with special explosion protection. Panel PCs are not just about the optimum connection to the machine, but often also about the design.

It was the brilliant idea for today's product diversity: at the end of the 1960s, Friedhelm Rose, founder of the company Rose from Porta Westfalica, developed aluminum enclosures. Until then, there had been no enclosures for encapsulating electronic and electrotechnical components in industrial applications. In the years that followed, the idea was therefore copied many times by the competition.

Since then, the product range has grown steadily: In addition to aluminum enclosures, Rose now also supplies variants in stainless steel, polyester and polycarbonate as well as explosion-proof enclosures, control enclosures, panel PCs, industrial monitors and support arm and stand systems. The company has thus evolved from a component supplier to a full-range supplier. Today, customers not only receive enclosures in a wide variety of designs for their application, but also tailor-made solutions.

Polyester Housings Offer High UV Protection

The company manufactures a wide range of enclosure systems—including those made from polyester. The specialists from Porta Westfalica were also pioneers in the industry here, as they established enclosures made of this material as the standard in the industry. Polyester and polycarbonate enclosures are ideal for use as distribution enclosures or junction boxes, for example. In addition to electronic components, these enclosures can also accommodate circuit boards and pneumatic elements. As polyester does not corrode and the glass fiber-reinforced material is resistant to UV light, these enclosures can be used both indoors and outdoors.

Polyester distribution enclosures meet the requirements of protection class IP66, are UL-certified and have a high impact resistance (IK07 to IK09 according to DIN EN 60068-2-75). Depending on the application, the company uses different polyester materials for the enclosures so that they offer very good protection against the respective environmental influences. For this reason, the enclosures have been used in numerous industries for decades.

Ideal for Indoor Use: Polycarbonate Housing

In addition to polyester enclosures, Rose also manufactures polycarbonate enclosures with IP66 protection. These products are particularly suitable for protecting terminal and electronic installations indoors. Polycarbonate enclosures are often used in machine, control and plant engineering as well as in I&C technology. Other areas of application include electrical and building installation technology as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning technology. For applications in areas with high levels of electromagnetic radiation, the specialist can coat the enclosures with a thin layer of aluminum or apply a conductive coating on request.

Absolutely Corrosion-Resistant: Aluminum Housing

Another large product segment is aluminum enclosures for electromechanical installations, which are now available in over 40 different sizes. All versions are made from a high-quality cast aluminum alloy AC-AlSi 12 (Fe) with a low copper content, which offers a high level of corrosion protection and basic EMC protection and enables optimum post-processing of the housings. The tongue and groove principle guarantees the absolute tightness of the products.

The company has developed the Aluform enclosures especially for use in visible areas: they are already prepared ex works to accommodate front foils and membrane keypads. Thanks to their robustness, Aluform enclosures effectively protect sensitive measurement technology, for example, from unwanted influences.

When it Has to Be Hygienic: Stainless Steel Housing

Stainless steel enclosures are the right choice for all areas of application in which harsh environmental conditions prevail or high hygiene requirements are placed on the installed components—such as in systems in the food industry or in energy and process technology. These enclosures have a high material quality (1.4301/304 or 1.4404/316L) and are therefore not only resistant to aggressive cleaning agents, but also to seawater. This is confirmed by the independent classification society Det Norske Veritas (DNV) in regular audits.

All stainless steel enclosures have good shielding, which can be reinforced with an additional EMC seal for applications in areas with high electromagnetic radiation. The specialist offers the enclosures in many variants: In addition to versions with a flange or external lugs for wall mounting, there are also those with a mounting plate or mounting rails. Customers can also choose between enclosures with a screwed or hinged cover.

Ex Enclosure Systems in Various Designs

Of course, there are also areas of application for which standard enclosures are not suitable. This applies, for example, to systems in which an explosive atmosphere may be present at least occasionally. For these applications, the specialist has a wide range of explosion-proof enclosure systems made of stainless steel, aluminum and polyester. All Ex enclosures are certified in accordance with ATEX/IECEx and reliably protect the components installed in them against the ingress of gas, dust and water. The enclosures are available with different protection concepts and can be used in ATEX zones 1 and 2 as well as 21 and 22.

Pressure Encapsulation for Maximum Flexibility

The Ex eb and Ex ia terminal enclosures prevent the ignition of an external potentially explosive atmosphere by an ignition spark generated inside the enclosure. Their surfaces are also designed to prevent static charging. There is therefore no risk of discharges and the associated sparking. Components installed in these enclosures must also be ATEX/IECEx-certified.

The situation is different with Ex db enclosure systems: Here, pressurized encapsulation ensures that an internal explosion cannot spread to the surrounding atmosphere. The encapsulation also protects the built-in components from the effects of a possible external explosion. The special design of the enclosures has the great advantage for users that they can use standard industrial components that do not themselves have ATEX or IECEx certification. They are therefore completely free in their choice of electromechanical components.

Protection Through Special Materials

The specialist achieves explosion protection for Ex polyester enclosures by adding graphite, among other things, which optimally dissipates electrostatic charges. In addition, the thickness of the paint layers is limited to a maximum of 0.2 mm (0.008 in) for coatings containing plastic. This prevents the plastic from impairing the discharge of electrostatic charges.

Control stations are a special area of the Ex enclosure systems: the specialist manufactures these local control stations according to customer specifications, e.g. for applications in the chemical or petrochemical industry. The control stations are made of stainless steel, aluminum or polyester, depending on the requirements, and are fitted with the desired internals. In addition to switches, buttons and indicator lights, the equipment options also include key switches and digital displays.

High-Quality Complete HMI Solutions

Control enclosures, panel PCs and industrial monitors, which the company also produces, are becoming increasingly important. The HMI systems "Made in Germany" act as an interface between the worker and the system and are being ordered by more and more machine builders due to increasing automation and digitalization. In addition to powerful, customer-specific electronics, the external appearance of the panel PCs is playing an increasingly important role. The automation specialists therefore offer their customers panel PCs with a high-quality design, which are configured precisely according to individual requirements. The optimum connection of the devices to the machine is also taken care of: support arm and stand systems enable efficient and ergonomic handling of the Panel PCs.

This complete package of panel PC and device carrier system is not available anywhere else.

High Demand from the Industry

With its innovative enclosure systems and HMI solutions, the company from East Westphalia says it has been setting the pace in the industry for decades. "Many competitors in the market take their cue from us when it comes to the dimensions of their enclosures," reports Joscha Plass, Product Manager Enclosure Systems at Rose. "However, nobody has such a comprehensive range of enclosures, panel PCs and processing options as we do." Customers from the industry appreciate this: Whether in the field of electromobility, in measurement and control technology or among operators of LNG and hydrogen terminals—the demand for enclosures and HMI systems from Rose is higher than ever before.
