ELB has developed a surface technology called Ultraceramic, which allows aluminum and magnesium components to be used in highly demanding applications. The plasma-ceramic surfaces form highly hard, dense protective layers, enabling the use of lightweight metals in previously unthinkable applications with high component requirements. The impact is evident in specific applications: the world’s first magnesium piston by Stihl enables extreme torque and significantly reduces the weight of a chainsaw—thanks to Ultraceramic, the lightweight metal withstands high wear and thermal stress. Significant CO2 savings can also be achieved in mobility: magnesium wheels can even be used, with the refined surface resisting not only weathering but also stone chipping. Furthermore, the refinement process uses no toxic substances, and the lightweight metal, including its surface, can be recycled. ELB thus combines technical performance with sustainable material use for industries such as automotive, aerospace, and medical technology.
