Tesla fans are still waiting in vain for the $20,000 electric car once announced by Elon Musk. Now another wants to make this dream come true.

In the USA, a new electric vehicle for the entry-level market is on the horizon: The car brand Slate, backed by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos among others, plans to launch a purely electric-powered pickup in 2026. The design of the model is characterized by simple and angular shapes reminiscent of vehicles from the 1980s. The approximately 4.40-meter-long (approx. 14.4 ft long) two-door features a 1.50-meter-long (approx. 4.9 ft long) open cargo bed. An additional storage space in the front trunk (frunk) offers space for nearly 200 liters. According to the manufacturer, the maximum payload is around 635 kilograms, with a towing capacity of 450 kilograms.

The vehicle is powered by a 150 kW electric motor on the rear axle, which is supposed to enable acceleration to 100 km/h (approx. 62 mph) in a little over eight seconds. Slate states the top speed as around 145 km/h (approx. 90 mph). Two battery variants with capacities of 53 kWh and 84 kWh allow for ranges of approximately 240 and 400 kilometers (approx. 149 and 248 miles), respectively. The fast-charging function enables charging from 20 to 80 percent in about 30 minutes.

High Safety Features

In the base version, the Slate is offered as a deliberately simply equipped utility vehicle: without paintwork, with steel wheels, and manual window cranks. An individual wrapping can be optionally ordered and applied in a do-it-yourself process. However, in terms of safety, the manufacturer promises solid equipment. Six airbags are planned for the pickup version and eight for a later SUV variant. Additionally, the vehicle is supposed to come standard with collision warning, a rear-view camera, ESP, traction control, and keyless entry. A five-star result in the crash test according to US NCAP standards is being targeted.

Interested parties can reserve the Slate for a reservation fee of 50 US dollars. If the current government incentive program for electric vehicles in the USA remains in place until the market launch, the entry price could be below the 20,000 US dollar mark.
