In January 2025, Intersport Austria and TGW Logistics signed the acceptance for a highly automated intralogistics system in Wels. The sporting goods retailer consolidated several small logistics locations with the fulfillment center. Automation serves as the central lever to enhance performance.

Intersport Austria is Austria's key player in the sports retail sector, serving around 1.8 million customers. The group is also responsible for the markets in neighboring countries Czech Republic, Slovakia, and Hungary. To adequately reflect the continuous growth in customers and orders in its intralogistics processes, Intersport Austria has extensively expanded its existing distribution center in Wels and brought it up to the latest technological standards.

The automation not only enables a significant increase in performance, capacity, and flexibility but also efficiently consolidates several small warehouses at one location.

TGW Logistics as a Competent, Proactive Partner

"Intersport has grown massively over the past decades, and naturally, logistics had to evolve alongside this business growth. Due to the demands placed on us, centralization only makes sense in combination with automation. This is the only way to meet the varying needs for the Point of Sale (POS) on a daily basis," explains Günther Junkowitsch, Head of Supply Chain Management at Intersport Austria. "We got to know TGW Logistics during our evaluation project as a very competent and, above all, proactive partner who, on the one hand, listened closely to our needs and, on the other hand, then worked with us to develop a solution."

Robots in Storage, Order Picking and Packaging

TGW Logistics has constructed a four-aisle shuttle system in recent months, which, thanks to triple-deep storage, provides maximum storage density for 122,000 containers and cartons, thus optimizing the available space. Orders are assembled at six high-performance picking workstations. One of these picking centers is equipped with the Rovoflex picking robot, which learns from each pick thanks to artificial intelligence. The shipping cartons are also fully automatically erected and automatically sealed after picking. The TGW Warehouse Management System (WMS) plans, controls, and monitors all processes in the automated area as well as in the manual warehouse and is connected to Intersport's merchandise management system.
