Locus Robotics, a provider of AI-driven warehouse automation solutions, has announced the successful implementation of its Locus-One platform at The Creative Club (TCC). Going forward, the platform will serve as the central orchestration and management system for 45 autonomous mobile robots (AMR) of the Locus Origin type. By continuously improving task allocation, route planning, and resource utilization, it aims to enable efficient, scalable, data-driven warehouse operations.

Manual Picking is Now a Thing of the Past

The Creative Club is an online retailer for fabrics, sewing supplies, and digital sewing patterns based in Schenefeld near Hamburg (Germany). The company offers sewing enthusiasts fabrics and haberdashery through twelve online shops across Europe. Additionally, designers can sell their digital sewing patterns and e-books related to sewing. Furthermore, TCC acts as a fulfillment service provider for smaller businesses and start-ups, handling the storage, picking, and shipping of their products.

According to the company, it automated its approximately 11,000 square-meter (approx. 13155 sq yd) fulfillment center within just a few weeks using Locus Robotics technologies, optimizing its entire warehouse processes. In particular, the previously manual picking and shipping preparation of ordered items is now a thing of the past. With the support of the deployed fleet of mobile robots, offered by Locus under a highly flexible Robot-as-a-Service (RaaS) model, significantly more efficient order processing is now possible. This not only increases customer satisfaction but also enables an exceptionally fast return on investment (ROI).

Before the collaboration, the company's decision-makers were looking for a scalable solution to redesign the warehouse layout and processes. The goal was to find innovative approaches and adapt them accordingly. For example, picking fabrics by the meter proved particularly complex, as this requires a specialized cutting process. Before automation, these fabrics had to be transported over long distances from the warehouse to separate cutting stations, processed there, and the remaining quantities re-stored—a time- and labor-intensive process that impacted the efficiency of the entire fulfillment center.

Redesign of the Warehouse Layout

The warehouse infrastructure was strategically adjusted with the Locus-One implementation to significantly shorten work paths and make processes more efficient. The optimized arrangement of work areas aims to reduce manual intermediate steps and completely eliminate certain consolidation processes.

"Particularly noteworthy is that our logistics employees have embraced the robots right from the start," emphasizes Tobias Kappelmann, Chief Operations Officer at The Creative Club. "Working with the bots is seen as a real relief in everyday work—some colleagues have even given them humorous names inspired by movies, which further contributes to the positive team dynamic."
