Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is considered the most important lever for decarbonizing aviation. According to the European Union’s “Refuel EU Aviation” regulation, SAF blending rates will gradually increase to 6 percent by 2030 and 70 percent by 2050, leading to an eightfold increase in demand between 2030 and 2050. Against this backdrop, Technip Energies, Airbus, Safran, and Tereos will establish their joint venture, Rebound, which will be based in Dunkirk in northern France.

Plans Call for the Production of 176,000 Short Tons of SAF Per Year

Among the available production methods, “Alcohol-to-Jet” is emerging as a scalable and cost-effective option in which ethanol, produced from agricultural and forestry residues, is converted into drop-in aviation fuel that can be blended with conventional jet fuel and used in existing engines and aircraft. In Dunkirk, the goal is to produce approximately 176,000 short tons  of SAF annually.

Coverage of the Entire Value Chain

During this project development phase, Technip Energies will serve as the lead partner and contribute its expertise in technology scaling and complex project execution. Airbus and Safran are participating as industrial partners, customer facilitators, and potential SAF customers. As a specialist in ethanol production, Tereos intends to supply and procure the ethanol required for the project. Together, the four partners cover the value chain from raw material supply to end use in aviation.

An important milestone has already been reached: The Port of Dunkirk has allocated an industrial site in northern France to Technip Energies, which will provide Rebound with significant logistical advantages in the transport of raw materials and products, as well as an optimized permitting process, following the establishment of the joint venture. The next steps include selecting the technology licensor, completing regulatory approvals, launching pre-FEED and FEED activities, finalizing agreements for feedstock supply and the SAF off-take agreement, and securing financing for the plant’s construction.

The formation of the joint venture is subject to customary closing conditions and approvals and is expected to be completed in the second half of this year. (se)
