The Munich-based (Germany) robotics company RobCo is valued at more than one billion U.S. dollars, thereby achieving "unicorn" status. At the same time, the company plans to expand its autonomous industrial robotics operations and its business in the United States.

RobCo has roughly doubled its valuation within nine months. At the end of January, the company raised $100 million in a Series C funding round. According to the Wall Street Journal, its valuation at that time was around $500 million. Existing investors such as Sequoia, Lightspeed, Greenfield, Kindred, Lingotto, and Promus Ventures are participating in the current transaction, along with new investors, including Cherry Ventures and the European Tech Collective.

The Wall Street Journal estimates the value of the recent share sale at $40 million. According to the report, a large portion of the shares sold came from employees. RobCo itself has not disclosed either the total value of the transaction or the exact breakdown between new capital and the sale of existing shares.

According to RobCo, new capital is also flowing into the company. Long-time employees are also being given the opportunity to sell a portion of their company shares. “The billion-valuation is, of course, a great milestone. But for us, what matters most is what comes next: bringing the next generation of autonomous industrial robotics into the factory floor,” says co-founder and CEO Roman Hölzl.

Alfie Should Be Able to Handle a Variety of Tasks

RobCo is developing Alfie, a humanoid industrial robot, for tasks that have been difficult to automate due to changing conditions. The system is designed to perceive its environment, derive action steps from that perception, and execute them autonomously. Among other things, RobCo is targeting unstructured and safety-critical processes in manufacturing.

In an earlier press release, RobCo describes Alfie as a two-armed robotic system that closely integrates hardware and software for perception and execution and is designed to adapt to new objects, processes, and conditions. The company cites precision assembly, material handling, picking, kitting, and palletizing as potential applications.

The launch is scheduled for March 4, 2027. RobCo plans to unveil Alfie at RobCoN in Munich, the company's first annual summit.

The U.S. Becomes a Second Pillar

At the same time, RobCo is expanding its presence in the U.S. According to the company, it now works with customers in more than a dozen states. Manufacturing and assembly operations in Austin, as well as a laboratory in San Francisco, are intended to support further expansion. According to the company, CEO Roman Hölzl has moved to the U.S. to drive the business forward there.

RobCo was founded in Munich in 2020 and develops hardware and software for industrial robotics. The company offers its systems through, among other things, a "robotics-as-a-service" model, which is designed to enable the use of robots without requiring a large initial investment.

With its billion-dollar valuation, the key question now is whether RobCo can deliver on its stated ambition to move from configurable industrial automation to more autonomous robotic systems in production—and scale them.
