The Italian tire manufacturer Pirelli is expanding its involvement in the field of assistance systems. To this end, the company has entered into a partnership with Univrses. As part of the agreement, Pirelli will initially acquire 30 percent of the shares in the Swedish AI specialist and will also secure the option to acquire a majority stake at a later date.

The aim of the cooperation is to merge the Swedes' AI-based computer vision technology with Pirelli's intelligent tire system "Cyber Tyre". This combination should not only make vehicles more efficient in the future, but above all safer - especially with regard to modern advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) and autonomous driving functions.

Tire Sensors Plus Deep Learning

In terms of technology, two worlds come together in this cooperation to provide a comprehensive picture of the driving environment. Pirelli's Cyber Tyre functions as an integrated hardware and software system that constantly collects data via sensors inside the tire and transmits it in real time to the vehicle electronics and the cloud.

In return, Univrses is contributing its "3DAI Engine". The software uses camera data and spatial deep learning to give vehicles visual perception capabilities such as 3D positioning and mapping. If tire data (e.g. on road conditions) is combined with the visual environment data, the vehicles act as rolling "AI road analysts".
