The Lithuanian army plans to upgrade its fleet with military vehicles from Germany. To strengthen its defense capabilities, the armed forces of the Baltic EU and NATO country will procure specialized trucks from Daimler Truck and off-road vehicles from Mercedes-Benz, with a contract value of around one billion euros. According to the Ministry of Defense in Vilnius, an agreement was signed with the local representative of the German automakers.

The delivery of the G-Class vehicles from Mercedes-Benz and the military truck models Zetros, Arocs, and Unimog from Daimler Truck is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2032. The procurement is partially to be financed with the help of a defense credit from the so-called EU Safe Program, according to a statement.

One of the Army's Largest Investments

According to the ministry, the acquisition represents "one of the largest investments in the logistics of the Lithuanian armed forces." The Lithuanian army intends to use the vehicles to transport troops, weapons, and supplies.

Lithuania borders the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Russia's ally Belarus. The war in Ukraine is seen in the Baltic state as a direct threat to national security. The government in Vilnius has therefore increased military spending and is massively upgrading its army.
