Digitizing data collection at key nodes of the distribution networks is an essential prerequisite for creating a future-proof power supply. The retrofit concept offered by EMH Energie-Messtechnik GmbH enables the modernization of practically any system in a relatively simple way.

Given the variety of differently constructed systems, the digitization of low-voltage networks always requires individual technical adaptations. With the Smart Grid Interface Module SGIM, EMH Energie-Messtechnik GmbH offers a flexible basis for retrofit solutions of any kind.(Image: EMH Energie-Messtechnik GmbH)

In order to continuously maintain a good overview of the load of low-voltage networks, a large number of local network stations and cable distribution cabinets should be equipped with the necessary technology for automatic recording and transmission of the corresponding information. Network operators thus face an enormous challenge: At the low-voltage level, the distribution networks in Germany alone comprise around 650,000 local network stations and more than one million cable distribution cabinets. The design and operating time of the facilities are anything but homogeneous, and different constructions from several manufacturers are often used in the same local network.

Individual Solutions Indispensable

For the necessity of digitization and implementation of appropriate monitoring technologies, this means: In practice, it is hardly feasible to modernize existing facilities according to a uniform concept. Even if a large part of the hardware installed in the respective local network is largely identical and can be processed according to standardized procedures, individualized solutions are required for all other locations involved in the modernization. Additionally, the points eligible for a retrofit cannot be arbitrarily determined. The decision on which locations the digitization of local network stations or cable distribution cabinets is sensible for is only made after an in-depth analysis of location-specific load data.

Modular Retrofit Concept

In order for network operators to realistically plan and calculate the effort required for modernization, the retrofit concept developed by EMH Energie-Messtechnik GmbH in cooperation with Be-Energy SG GmbH relies on modularity and individually tailored hardware and software components for each application. The basis is the Smart Grid Interface Module SGIM offered by EMH, a hardware platform that can be equipped with different functional modules according to customer requirements. Standard-designed for uninterrupted installation in a 7.28 inches busbar system, the system can alternatively be mounted on a wall or a door depending on local conditions.

The data provided by the SGIM enables not only a simple load statement but also an accurate representation of the current network situation, including the load caused by photovoltaic systems or e-charging infrastructure with harmonic distortions. Thanks to an open and scalable software structure, the SGIM can also be seamlessly integrated into a wide range of IT infrastructures and software environments, ensuring that facilities digitized according to EMH’s retrofit concept are early on prepared for the possibility of later migration from the remote control world to the IoT world.

About EMH Energie-Messtechnik GmbH

Founded in 1984, EMH Energie-Messtechnik GmbH specializes in testing technology for energy measurement technology. The medium-sized company based in Brackel develops and produces precision measuring and testing devices for current, voltage, and power as well as online analysis devices for the insulating oil of power transformers. In addition to standard products, EMH provides custom individual solutions in the form of special designs. The products are used in the testing of electricity meters at legally authorized testing facilities, by distribution network operators or meter operators, and by manufacturers of electricity meters. EMH's range of services also includes the calibration of specific measuring devices in accordance with the requirements of the German Accreditation Body DAkkS.
