These industries will benefit from 3D printing:

Leuders believes that the long-term winners will be companies willing to strategically invest in new manufacturing processes while also being able to handle the uncertainties involved. According to him, prominent examples from the recent past can be found in aerospace and medical technology. However, for the expert, it is not only a question of financial resources but sometimes also one of corporate culture. Other industries and companies may find it more challenging—those heavily reliant on cost-driven mass production. Nonetheless, there are enough application areas, though mainly limited to toolmaking and benefiting the end product less directly.

Lantzsch agrees with this view. The clear winners in the development of 3D printing are, therefore, industries that rely on customized, highly complex components and can fully exploit the advantages of flexibility and design freedom offered by additive manufacturing to serve their customers. According to Lantzsch, in aerospace and medical technology, additive manufacturing provides enormous opportunities to optimize components while simultaneously reducing material and thus weight. High-end automotive engineering and motorsport will also benefit from the possibilities of additive manufacturing, especially in terms of lightweight construction and performance enhancement of components. More on the topic can be learned at the upcoming Formnext in Frankfurt am Main (Germany).
