BMW and Solid Power are testing pure solid-state cells in a prototype vehicle. The automaker has integrated large-format, pure so-called ASSB cells (All-Solid-State Batteries) from Solid Power into an i7. According to BMW, the concept battery integrated into the test vehicle combines prismatic cells in modules with new module concepts for integrating ASSB cells. The goal of the tests is to learn more about managing cell expansion. Additionally, the project partners aim to find answers on how operational pressure is controlled and how temperature boundary conditions are adjusted.

Development of Market-Ready Battery Takes Time

The cells with sulfide-based electrolytes have been developed and manufactured collaboratively by BMW and Solid Power. However, according to BMW, further development steps are necessary to integrate the solid-state cells into a competitive overall storage solution. The biggest potential advantage of the solid-state battery is a higher energy density in a very compact storage unit—compared to today’s batteries.

BMW and Solid Power have been cooperating since 2016. BMW supported the joint development with an investment in Solid Power in May 2021 as part of a funding round. Since 2022, there has been a technology transfer agreement between BMW and Solid Power. Both companies are jointly investing in the development of solid-state batteries. This includes BMW's plans to operate a solid-state cell prototype line at the Cell Manufacturing Competence Center in Parsdorf. The manufacturing will be based on a research and development license, and the experience and expertise of Solid Power will also be incorporated.
