The innovation dynamics in battery technology significantly increased in 2025. As the annual report of the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA) shows, the number of published patent applications in the relevant technology classes rose by 25.8 percent to 9,090. The basis is published patent applications effective in Germany at the DPMA and the European Patent Office, which, due to the 18-month disclosure period, do not include inventions newly filed in 2025.

Dynamics in Battery Technologies, Asia Dominates

German companies and research institutions also significantly increased their applications, yet Asian countries continue to dominate the ranking. The Republic of Korea ranked first with 2,419 applications (+33.4 percent), followed by China (1,749, +10.8 percent) and Japan (1,445, +28.2 percent). Germany ranked fourth with 1,340 applications (+20.6 percent), while the USA held fifth place with 841 applications (-2.7 percent).

"The increase underscores the enormous technological and economic significance of efficient energy storage. It is good that innovation activity has evidently also increased significantly in Germany," says DPMA President Eva Schewior. "With our annual report, we want to highlight current innovation trends and emphasize that the protection of intellectual property is of central importance for technological progress, economic success, and societal prosperity."

Among the applicants, LG Energy Solution, Ltd. (1,148 applications) and Samsung SDI Co., Ltd. (740) led, followed by Contemporary Amperex Technology (Hong Kong) Limited (577) and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (472). GM Global Technology Operations LLC (301) ranked 5th.

Renewable Energies: Moderate Growth

In renewable energies, the number of patent applications remained at a high level, but the dynamics were significantly lower than in battery technology, with an increase of only 1.5 percent. The focus was particularly on solar technology and wind power, as well as smaller areas such as hydropower, geothermal, and biogas technology. Increases were primarily seen in wind turbines (+5.9 percent).

Germany Ranks 2nd in Solar Technology and Wind Power

In solar technology, China ranked 1st with 162 applications (+19.1 percent), followed by Germany with 149 applications (-19.0 percent). Behind them were the USA, France, and Japan. In wind turbines, Denmark continued to lead (162 applications), while Germany ranked 2nd with 149 applications (+24.2 percent). They were followed by Spain, China, and the USA.
