Asia is leaving others behind in battery innovations. The number of published patent applications from the three Asian countries increased significantly more in 2024 compared to the previous year than those from German companies, research institutions, and private inventors. These figures come from the new annual report of the German Patent and Trademark Office (DPMA). The applications published by the German and neighboring European Patent Office were evaluated, with duplicate applications accounted for. According to this, innovations in battery technology increased by a total of 16.6 percent (to a total of 7,242 applications) last year. The growth was largely due to active development activities in Asia.

South Korea ranked first with an increase of 10.3 percent and 1,817 applications. Next is China with a 22.6 percent growth and 1,591 patent applications. Japan secured third place, overtaking Germany with a total of 1,136 applications—a rise of 7.8 percent. German battery technology applications increased by only 1.9 percent (to 1,112). The three largest individual applicants were the Korean corporations LG and Samsung, as well as the Chinese battery manufacturer CATL, as further learned.
