According to the news agency Bloomberg, Analog Devices is in advanced talks about the takeover of Empower Semiconductor. The potential purchase price is said to be around 1.5 billion US dollars in cash. There has been no official confirmation from either company to date.

Empower Semiconductor, based in Milpitas, California, develops power management chips for AI processors and data centers. The company specializes in integrated voltage regulators that are placed directly under GPUs or other AI accelerators. Empower thus addresses a central challenge of current AI infrastructures: the efficient supply of very powerful processors with high currents.

The vertical power delivery architecture pursued by Empower is designed to conduct currents of more than 3,000 amps directly through the circuit board to the processor instead of distributing them laterally across the board. According to the company, this reduces resistive losses and improves system efficiency. With the Crescendo platform presented in October 2024, Empower positioned itself in this area as a provider for next-generation AI data center designs.

Strategic Importance for AI Data Centers

For operators of large AI infrastructures, the energy efficiency of the power supply can have a significant impact on operating costs, cooling and scalability. If relevant system losses can be reduced by changing the power supply, power management becomes a strategic differentiator rather than a standard component. This explains why corresponding IP and platforms are becoming increasingly important in the field of AI accelerators.

The estimated purchase price would be significantly higher than Empower's last reported financing round. The company raised more than 140 million US dollars in a Series D round at the end of 2024, led by Fidelity Management & Research and other investors. The potential deal thus also reflects the increased valuation of suppliers whose technologies are closely linked to the expansion of AI data centers.

The Reuters news agency was initially unable to independently verify the Bloomberg report. Analog Devices and Empower Semiconductor did not immediately respond to a request for comment. If the transaction goes through, Analog Devices would significantly expand its position in the field of power management for compute-intensive AI applications.(sg)
