The AI experts advocating for a more cautious approach to AI development warn of a loss of control and therefore appeal to the U.S. government to participate in international efforts for technical and regulatory measures to manage the development pace of artificial intelligence. Among the 1,171 signatories so far are leading researchers and managers from "ChatGPT" developer "OpenAI," its competitor Anthropic, as well as Facebook's Meta and Google. They point out, even if it sounds like dystopian science fiction à la Terminator, that software with artificial intelligence could soon be capable of self-evolution. The background: alarm bells rang recently when an AI model from "OpenAI" managed to essentially infiltrate the open internet on its own, including accessing computer systems of another AI player. It behaved, so to speak, like a hacker.

AI Can Escape Human Control

Already, large portions of programming code in tech companies are being written by AI software, albeit still under human supervision. However, the rather concerning "Cyberdyne" moment, when the development of artificial intelligence can be automated, is considered a turning point for loss of control. Predicting how much this would accelerate AI progress is difficult. But there is a real risk that the pace could surpass human ability to understand or even control the resulting systems. Coordinated international efforts are necessary because every country and every developer company is currently under competitive pressure and therefore unwilling to slow down AI progress. Additionally, the technical means and a regulatory framework for this are currently lacking.
