As is well known, hard metal is a valuable raw material and currently more expensive than ever before. Since the beginning of 2026, the price of ammonium paratungstate (APT), the most important precursor for tungsten carbide, has more than doubled from 920 USD/MTU at the beginning of January to over 2,090 USD/MTU at the beginning of March. The effects are immediately noticeable: weight surcharges on hard metal rods have risen in the same period from around 32.90 euros per (approx. €14.92 per lb) to over 120 euros per kilogram (approx. €54.43 per lb).
