Volkswagen is reinforcing its "In China, for China" strategy at Auto China 2026 with new, locally developed electric vehicles and digital technologies. The focus will be on four world premieres and a new electronics and software architecture tailored to China, CEA. This will integrate functions such as over-the-air updates, driver assistance systems and AI-based services.

At the same time, the Group is working on electrically powered cars: around 20 electrified models are to be launched in China in 2026, around 30 by 2027 and around 50 by 2030 - including around 30 purely electric vehicles. Volkswagen presented four of these before the start of Auto China. These include:

  • VW ID Aura T6 (FAW-Volkswagen): The ID Aura T6 is the first model in the new ID Aura series in the electric mid-size SUV segment. It is based on the China Electronic Architecture with L2++ assistance functions and OTA updates. It was developed in 24 months in collaboration with Xpeng.
  • VW ID Unyx 09 (Volkswagen Anhui): The ID Unyx 09 is an electric sedan around five meters long with a focus on digital features. The car is equipped with high-performance computers, AI assistant and advanced L2++ driver assistance systems.
  • Jetta X (concept): The Jetta X is the entry into electromobility for the previously combustion-powered sub-brand. A new design with the name "Modern Robust" and the market launch of the first model are planned for 2026. Four electrified models are to follow by 2028.
  • AUDI E7X: The E7X is an all-electric SUV from the China-exclusive brand, developed with SAIC. The car will be available with two drive systems, with 300 kilowatts and 500 kilowatts, all-wheel drive and, for the first time, level 3 driving functions. The technical basis is the "Advanced Digitized Platform"

ADAS and Local Development

Local development structures play an important role. The VW competence center Carizon has already brought an L2+ system for freeways into series production, including in the ID Unyx 07. Volkswagen has announced further developed L2++ systems for 2026, including navigation on autopilot in city and freeway traffic and automated parking.

Volkswagen is also introducing a new operating and functional concept with "agent-based AI". Unlike traditional voice assistants, an AI agent is designed to recognize user intentions, control complex functions and make context-dependent decisions. The systems run locally in the vehicle and use an integrated language model to meet data protection requirements.

From 2027, the next generation of the architecture, CEA 2.0, will create a computing platform for driving functions, cockpit and digital services. The plan is to create a multi-agent system that combines AI modules for driving, infotainment and ecosystem services.
