The new plant on the existing production site in San Antonio is set to open by 2030 and create 2,000 jobs, the company announced on Monday. Production of the mid-size pickup truck Tacoma will be relocated from the Mexican plant in Baja California to Texas after the factory is completed. However, production of the Tacoma at the Mexican plant in Guanajuato will continue.

US President Donald Trump repeatedly pressured car manufacturers to relocate their production to the USA and imposed tariffs on cars and parts. A White House spokesperson stated that Toyota's investment announcement is "one of many driven by the Trump administration's agenda of tariffs, deregulation, and tax cuts."

The governor of Texas, Greg Abbott, said the investment would be supported by a state grant of 20 million dollars and other incentives. Toyota had only relocated Tacoma production from San Antonio to Mexico in 2020. The company had successfully advocated to the government for a relaxation of emission regulations but simultaneously suffered under tariffs imposed by Trump.
